Admissions to PICU can be a stressful time for families, and we are keen to support the family as a whole: colleagues in Social Services and Clinical Psychology provide us with valuable support. This can include children who have had high-risk surgery, or who need additional support. Children may be non-invasively ventilated in PHDU, or ventilated through a tracheostomy.

PICU Nursing at Children's - Lisa's Story

We admit children from hospitals within our Trust, or from hospitals within the Thames Valley Network where fewer higher dependency beds are available. When we care for a child on PHDU there is usually one nurse or assistant practitioner caring for two patients. When a child is well enough to leave critical care, we will transfer them to one of the wards in the Children's Hospital, or to a children's ward at their local hospital. Families may feel stressed or anxious when a child leaves critical care; it can take time to get used to not having or nursing and the constant monitoring that the child has previously received.

A Children's Critical Care Outreach nurse reviews each child within 24 hours of discharge and at intervals as required. They provide support during the transition period between Critical Care and the wards and also support the nursing and medical staff caring for children after their stay in PICU. The service provides expert advice, decision-making support and patient transport to hospitals in the south of England.
